Why can't we get high school baseball parents to act like college baseball parents?

As an experienced college and high school baseball umpire working 40+ games in April and May, I see all kinds of behavior both on and off the field. Nothing mystifies me more than parents of high school baseball players acting like they are still in grade school! Yelling at coaches, yelling at umpires and acting like they do not get out much. These behaviorally challenged know-it alls have no clue as to what is appropriate at a high school athletic contest.

During most college baseball games I work, parents sit and actually watch and appreciate the games using appropriate behavior. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they do not see their son on a regular basis, do not want other players and parents to think they are idiots, or they are worried that their male offspring won't like them anymore!

In any case let's bottle this and make parents of high school baseball players drink from the fountain of maturity.

I couldn't agree more. The only difference between high school parents and little league parents is the fact that their kids are a little bigger.

Thanks.

You say it's the ump's call what about an ump that yell's at parents when we didn't say anything about a call. Well, I think its unprofessional for a ump in baseball yell at all of us because we said something about a pitch that we thought went over the plate. Well, I know that if it goes over the plate on the corners it counts. I played softball in high school the rules are almost the same.

It's really very complex in this busy life to listen news on TV, therefore I simply use the web for that reason, and take the newest information.

I find that the lower level teams usually have more uninformed parents/coaches. Players at any level are almost always stellar. High school coaches and most parents in the Milwaukee area are mostly quite well behaved. I find it best to just ignore any parent during a game since they are not part of the game and most likely don't know the rules often. Sometime, the rivalry between two teams becomes the umpire's problem.
